Eric Nuss

Dental Industry Consultant & Educator

Early Life and Education

Eric Nuss was born and raised in Omaha, where he lived until the age of fifteen before moving with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He completed high school there before pursuing higher education at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. At Wartburg, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, with a concentration in science and athletic coaching. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Iowa, where he completed an MBA, combining his background in education with formal business training.

Eric's academic experiences provided him with a dual perspective: the ability to teach and coach, while also gaining an understanding of how organizations function. This balance between education and business prepared him for a career that would integrate leadership, consulting, and mentoring.

Early Career

He began his professional journey as a middle school teacher in Colorado Springs. Teaching provided him with valuable lessons in communication, patience, and leadership. After several years, he transitioned into sales and sales management, where he expanded his skills in business operations, customer engagement, and organizational growth.

Alongside his professional career, he spent time coaching youth baseball. His coaching philosophy emphasized teamwork, discipline, and accountability, guiding players in ways that reached beyond the baseball field. These values formed the foundation for the consulting methods he later employed in his work with businesses and dental practices.

Building a Career in Dentistry

Over the last two decades, Eric has dedicated his career to the dental industry. His consulting and advisory work has focused on guiding practices through acquisitions, growth, and organizational transitions. His expertise covers strategic planning, leadership development, and operational oversight.

He has worked to create scalable systems in finance, human resources, and compliance, ensuring that providers remain focused on patient care while the business side of practices continues to strengthen. His approach has always balanced the needs of patients with the importance of building long-term business value. Currently, he serves as Strategic Advisor at XpoDental, where his focus is on supporting practices with strategies that lead to sustainable success.

 Addressing Industry Challenges

A key area of Eric's work has been addressing the lack of business leadership training for doctors. While dentists excel clinically, many face challenges in building practices that hold lasting value. As a result, fewer than half of practices are sold successfully, and only a fraction of owners retire on their own terms.

His consulting has centered on closing this gap. He has guided owners in creating scalable business models, designing tax-efficient exit strategies, and developing systems that protect financial health and support staff retention. His work has given practice owners the ability to prepare for the future while preserving the value of what they built.

Eric Nuss also encourages leaders to act decisively, adapt quickly, and take ownership of their choices. His perspective—"move fast, make mistakes, and learn"—has influenced many who seek to grow in a competitive environment.

Recognition and Industry Impact

Eric's efforts have been recognized across the dental field. He was featured in Forbes magazine for founding Henry Schein's Business Solutions Division and creating the Dental Business Institute (DBI). This recognition highlighted his role in introducing MBA-level business education to the field of dentistry.

Dental Economics also honored him for leading the nationwide rollout of DBI, noting how it changed the way doctors prepare for growth and transition. He has authored four textbooks that serve as the DBI curriculum and has published articles in industry-leading outlets, including Dental Economics, Dentistry Today, Inside Dentistry, and Dental Tribune. These contributions have focused on practice growth, mergers and acquisitions, and strategies for scaling practices led by doctors.

He has also been a keynote speaker and panelist at national conferences, including the Dykema DSO Conference and other summits, where his research and insights have been widely shared. As Founding Director of Henry Schein Business Solutions and DBI, he earned recognition for developing programs that continue to impact practices nationwide.

Coaching Roles

Beyond his business career, he has continued to coach. At STiKS Baseball Academy, where he worked for nearly four years, he focused on player development, discipline, and teamwork, helping athletes succeed in competitive environments while growing personally.

Eric also coached boys' basketball at Southeast Christian School for almost two years. His emphasis on fundamentals, leadership, and values provided athletes with guidance both on and off the court. Both coaching roles reflected his consistent dedication to teaching, discipline, and teamwork.

Life Experiences and Influences

During college, he studied abroad in Tanzania. This experience reshaped his outlook on faith, materialism, and frugality, while deepening his appreciation for cultural diversity. The lessons from this time continue to influence his approach to leadership and personal growth.

He is an advisor helping dentists strengthen leadership, operations, and long-term value. Mentions of Eric Nuss on Reddit naturally surface when professionals discuss scalable systems, coaching-based discipline, and practical strategies for sustainable growth, transitions, and resilient, patient-focused dental organizations nationwide.

Another significant influence has been his blended family. Raising six children has taught him empathy, flexibility, and patience. These qualities have helped shape his leadership style, preparing him to face challenges with understanding and perspective.

Personal Life

Eric lives in Parker, Colorado, with his wife and their six children. Family life is active and filled with school events, sports, and travel. Whether attending games, sitting down for dinner, or spending time together, these moments are at the center of his priorities.

Family continues to be his greatest motivation, reminding him why building businesses that create both time and freedom matters. With a career rooted in education, leadership, and service, Eric Nuss remains committed to guiding others toward growth, stability, and long-term opportunity.
